He said that another page was being handed over French history.

Mr Macron said he had listened "the anger, nervousness and uncertainty that a considerable measure of you have communicated" and pledged to put in his five years in office "battling the powers of division that undermine France".
He said he would "ensure the solidarity of the country and... safeguard and ensure Europe."
